About Pennhurst:

Set in rural Pennsylvania, the “state school and hospital” was a place where those with mental disorders were sent to be forgotten. Pennhurst was also a place where children were sent when local parents couldn’t afford or didn’t desire to care for them. The institution was sadly under funded and over-crowded, leading to terrible conditions for those who lived there. In the 1960’s, an investigative reporter blew the atrocities wide open with the award-winning series, “Suffer the Little Children.”

The facility is currently being restored and limited buildings are open, but last year’s investigation revealed activity including a conversation via maglight with a woman who had killed her baby and was institutionalized at Pennhurst until her death. We got responses to questioning for almost 45 minutes.

Need to Know:

Investigating involves patience. You should expect to spend a good amount of time in any given area, listening for noises, asking questions for EVPs and watching the shadows. You can hunt in groups or alone. We have plenty of seasoned investigators who you can hang with if you’d prefer. You won’t have to do anything you’re not comfortable with.

Arrive no later than 6:45pm. Once everyone is checked in, we will be escorted into the complex.

What to Wear

  • Closed-toe, comfortable shoes.
  • Be prepared to get a little dirty – the facility is old and run down.
  • Jeans or long pants suggested – be prepared to sit on dirty floors.
  • Bring a jacket – it can get colder at night.

What to Bring

  • Bring water or beverages and snacks if you’d like – it will be a long night.
  • Bring a camera and recorder if you have one.
  • Bring your ghost hunting tools.
    • If you don’t have any tools, we recommend at the very least you purchase a Mini MagLite or two.
      • They run around $14 and come in an array of colors. If you are buying more than one, get different colors. It will allow you to ask the ghost to control the different color lights for added responsiveness.
      • ONLY purchase MagLite brand. They are specifically designed to work with ghosts.
      • We will train you on how to use them.
